COP 15: Adaptation fund remains almost empty10.16.09

The UN fund set up to help vulnerable countries adapt to climate change has received only a fraction of the amounts needed.

While the need for climate change adaptation funding is generally agreed to amount to hundreds of billions of US dollars, the UN fund set up for the purpose in 2008 currently holds just 18 million – not billion – US dollars. The figure is given in a New York Times feature, quoting Brazil’s lead climate negotiator, Luiz Alberto Figueiredo Machado:

“The level of ambition in funding is not matching up to the sense of urgency everyone now has (…) an inadequate level of financing (is) a deal breaker for us.”
